The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that the presence of the virus was confirmed on October 24 in a flock of 139,000 broilers in Gordon County.
“This poses a serious threat to Georgia’s No. 1 industry and to the thousands of Georgians whose livelihoods depend on poultry production,” Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper said in a press release. “Our team is working around the clock to contain the spread and protect our flocks.”
This is the first time since January that a commercial poultry flock in the state had been infected. That month, two flocks in Elbert County were affected. One involved 130,400 broilers and the other involved 45,500 broiler breeders.
