The stunning ineptitude of Scott Walker

Scott Walker says Foxconn deal will help revive manufacturing in Midwest.  (Wisconsin State Journal, 2/14/2019)

A challenge that Walker blew off during the 8 years he was governor!

Gov. Scott Walker said he will focus on growing workforce development if he is elected to a third term during a stop Thursday at a business division of energy company U.S. Venture, Inc. "Our game plan to grow the economy is real simple," Walker said. "We need to focus on workforce."...

And what did Walker do when he hit the ground running in 2011?

He dropped the bomb.

"Divide and conquer."

UPDATE. 2018 revised book sales report

US trade segment increased by 4.6% in 2018.  (Books + Publishing, 2/14/2019)
The StatShot Annual Report is a yearly statistical survey of publishing’s estimated size and scope. It uses yearly sales data from 1375 publishers, and makes estimates for publishers who don’t participate based on company financial reports, government filings and other third-party sources.
The AAP will release final figures later this year, which will include sales estimates from publishers that don’t report to the AAP.

2/1/2019 update starts here.

Ebook and downloaded audiobooks to be added when figures become available.

Print Unit Sales Increased 1.3% in 2018.  (Publishers Weekly, 1/4/2019)
Unit sales of print books rose 1.3% in 2018 over 2017 at outlets that report to NPD BookScan. According to BookScan, which tracks 80% to 85% of print sales, units topped 695 million in the 52-week period ended December 29 compared to 686.9 million in 2017.
Print book sales have been trending upward, albeit at a slow pace, since 2013. The modest 2018 gain was driven by the adult nonfiction segment. Not only did political books pile up big sales last year, but Michelle Obama’s Becoming was 2018’s runaway bestseller, selling 3.4 million copies at outlets that report to BookScan.

10/31/2018 update starts here.

Disappearing cities and boroughs of the Keystone State: Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania

WILKES-BARRE -- For more than a century, the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania fed the furnaces of a nation. It boiled the steam in the locomotives that transported tons of coal to Harrisburg and Philadelphia, where it fueled the industries that built America and warmed the homes of workers at night.
It was, and remains, perhaps the largest anthracite coal deposit in the world -- some 480 square miles of coal-bearing rock, which ran from northern Dauphin County through the valleys past Pottsville, north to Hazleton and beyond to Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.

Source:  Wikipedia

Wilkes-Barre's population peaked at 86,626 in 1930.  Its 2016 estimated population is 40,569 -- a drop of 46,057 (53%).

The City of Wilkes-Barre is located in Luzerne County, 20 miles southwest of Scranton and 112 miles northeast of Philadelphia.

"Hot Smoke and Sasafrass" by Bubble Puppy debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending February 15, 1969

Bubble Puppy, a one-hit wonder psychedelic band from Houston, made their only appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Hot Smoke and Sasafrass".  The single debuted at #84, spent 12 weeks on the chart, peaking at #14.

In other chart action, David Ruffin also made his first, though not his last, appearance with "My Whole World Ended, one of three of this week's debuts to reach the top 10.  The Temptations' "Runaway Child, Running Wild" became the group's 9th single to reach the top 10.  Edwin Starr, another Motown artist, scored his most successful recording to date with "Twenty-Five Miles".

It's worth noting that in their first and only appearance on the Hot 100, the Nazz notched 13 weeks on the chart even though "Hello It's Me" never went higher than #68.

Bubble Puppy's one hit remains a wonder.  (Houston Chronicle, 11/7/2013)
The song's appeal is obvious. It's tough and gentle, with a forceful beat and lighter harmonies, as well as some alterations in time signature that suggested future prog rock. The song retains a feeling of improvisatory jamming without meandering. The lyrics are the most psychedelic thing about it.

GOP aide leaves job after Twitter flap about Colin Kaepernick and black history.  (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 2/14/2019)
"Keith Best is no longer an employee of the state Assembly," Beyer said by email. "He elected to retire following the representative’s concerns over his unauthorized tweet." Best was paid $52,000 a year before he relinquished his job. He had worked for the Assembly for four years, according to Assembly Chief Clerk Patrick Fuller.
Apparently, there are no plans for a retirement party.

Greetings from Trump's America: Sullivan County in Upstate New York, slapped around and flipped by Trump in 2016

State Sen.-elect Martha Hennessey, D-Hanover, said there was merit to Howard’s assessment of Trump’s victory, but she saw other factors playing a role as well.
“I think there was a rallying cry for ‘non-Washington’ people and (as being part of Washington for more than 20 years) Hillary can’t do anything about that,” said Hennessey, who defeated Marie Lozito, R-Claremont, for the District 5 Senate seat which includes several Sullivan County towns. Hennessey narrowly won in Claremont, but handily won the rest of the district, which stretches from Lyme to Charlestown.
As far as the Claremont presidential results, Hennessey said they reflected a mood seen in many other parts of the country that propelled Trump to victory.

Flipped by Trump in 2016.

(3rd-party candidates received 31.6% of vote in 1992, 15.4% of vote in 1996)

Perhaps the bloom is off the Trump rose.   In the U.S. Senate race,  Democrat incumbent Kristen Gillibrand's won 53.3% of the vote to Republican challenger Chele Farley 46.7%.  Gov. Andrew Cuomo, on the other hand, lost the county by 10.2 percentage point, but he's not an Upstate fav.  (Upstate New York, as I learned while attending college at the SUNY-Buffalo, is anything north of the Bronx.)
