Redistricting Pipe Dream

Editorial: GOP should lead on fairness issue. (Eau Claire Leader Telegram, 12/9/2013)

Hard to talk about the high road when Russ Decker was Majority Leader. Democrats have a hard time gaining the moral high ground on this issue. In 2010, it was the Democrats who controlled both houses of the Legislature, and Democrat Jim Doyle was governor. The 2010 census was in progress. The Democrats could have adopted the Iowa system at that time but didn't. Maybe they hoped to similarly gerrymander the districts if they retained their majorities, or maybe they figured at worst one of the houses would flip and the two sides would have had to compromise.

Not that I remember anyone clamoring for change at the time.
