Oshkosh 2012 Budget Deficit Projected to Balloon to As Much as $2.3 Million
Budget deficit projected to double in Oshkosh. (Oshkosh Northwestern, 9/18/2011)
Excerpt: Increases in the cost of fuel and health insurance and cuts to Community Development Block Grant funding are likely to double the city's projected 2012 budget deficit.
City staff earlier this year projected a $800,000 deficit based on the combination of cost savings and revenue reductions from the state's biennial budget.
Oshkosh Finance Director Peggy Steeno previously projected that the difference between cost savings from employee contributions to retirement funds and health insurance premiums made possible by changes to collective bargaining rules would fall about $800,000 short of offsetting cuts to state shared revenue, transportation aid and recycling grants.
But in a Sept. 9 memo, City Manager Mark Rohloff said fuel costs, the cost of health insurance and federal block grant cuts would likely increase the gap between revenues and expenses to $1.6 million to $2.3 million.
