Facing $2.5 Budget Shortfall, City of La Crosse Considers a Variety of Fees
La Crosse weighs fees to bolster budget. (La Crosse Tribune, 9/14/2011)
Excerpt: La Crosse's proposed 2012 budget includes almost $438,000 in new revenue through fees for such activities as launching a boat, hosting a special event or having a massage business.
A separate list of fire department-related fees could bring in another $370,000 not now in the budget, city Finance Director Wayne Delagrave told the city's Board of Estimates on Tuesday.
The board met for a second time as it and staff work to shape a 2012 operating budget that started with an estimated $2.5 million shortfall, including $1.5 million less in state money.
City departments had been directed to reduce their budget requests by 3.2 percent, either through cuts or by finding additional revenue sources.
The proposed budget eliminates almost 30 positions but would be under the state levy limits - if city officials opt to keep most of the fees or fee increases, each capable of generating as little as $100 or as much as $100,000 over the year.
