U.S. 40 Cross Section of the United States of America (Chapter 31: Roadside Vendor)

That was then (1953).

From chapter 30:
A great highway like U.S. 40 creates a whole roadside-life along it.  There is a world of service stations and garages, of hotels and motels and motor courts, of restaurants and cafes and "clubs", of maintenance-stations and police stations, and of vendors of all kinds, who seek to turn an honest penny in season.

This is now.  At what would have been approximately just outside the city limits in 1953.

Google Maps

Brazil is located 64 miles west/southwest of Indianapolis and 13 miles east-northeast of Terre Haute.  Brazil's current population is 8,181 -- compared to 8,600 in 1953.
