Key dates
  • 1893. "Book social" given by the People's Literary Society (November)
  • 1893.  City Council adopts resolution establishing a library (December )
  • 1894.  Library opens in McBean Building (February)
  • 1902.  Andrew Carnegie Foundation provides $20,000 for construction of new library building.
  • 1903.  Carnegie library opens on December 3.
  • 1914.  Library modernized with electric lighting.
  • 1915.  Fire in library offices causes $3,000 in damage; most of earliest library records destroyed.
  • 1947.  Death of Minnie Enger, who had worked at library for 30 years.
  • 1949.  Children's room opened as a memorial to Enger.
  • 1969.  New library opens to replace outmoded Carnegie building.
