Wisconsin library history link of the day: Jane Morgan Memorial Library, Cambria

Key dates
  • 1895.  Cambria News advocates for opening of reading room for young people of community.  
  • c. 1898.  Newspaper editor opens reading room in his office.  Popularity of service forces relocation to Jane Morgan's store.
  • 1904.  Miss Myfanwy becomes 1st librarian.  Paid $8/month.
  • 1916.  Group of Cambria residents form a library board.  Library located at Lindenlaub Millinery Store.
  • 1917.  Village board appropriation: $200.  (Raised to $270 in 1919)
  • 1923-1940.  Mrs. Mary Cottam serves as librarian.  Replaced by Mrs. Myfanwy Archer.
  • 1943.  Robert Tarrant purchases building and donates it for library use.  (It is where the library is currently located.)
    • Library on 1st floor
    • Meeting and club rooms on 2nd floor
    • Jane Morgan is Robert Tarrant's mother.
