Excerpt: The foundation has raised more than $675,600 in its "Help Us Make $1 Million for the Library" campaign, according to foundation executive director Jonna Ward.
In all, there were 4,438 contributors. The largest donation was $50,000 from a longtime library supporter, Ward said. One donor broke into her penny jar and rolled $35 worth of coins and dropped them off at the Central Library.
Ward said she believes the biggest reason for such a successful campaign was the challenge from the anonymous donor, "but it's also driven by what the library is going through on its budget. Those two things combined proved a catalyst."
The library's 2011 budget calls for an 8.5 percent cut.
