A brief history of the Federalist Society and its shady leader, Leonard Leo
The Federalist Society was started in 1982 by four conservative law students from Yale Law School and the University of Chicago Law School. The society’s first conference speakers included Antonin Scalia, who was then a professor, and Theodore Olson, who worked in the Reagan DOJ as an assistant attorney general. Members of the society insist it is not an advocacy group, but rather “a forum for discussion of law and public policy from both sides” and the society’s website says it exists “to sponsor fair, serious, and open debate about the need to enhance individual freedom and the role of the courts in saying what the law is rather than what they wish it to be.” This is, of course, patently untrue.
