Politics and population: Many rural counties are emptying out

 
Iowa leads the way on this demographic trend.

95.5% white Adams County's population has decreased 73% since its 1900 peak of 13,601.

In Adams County, as well as many other rural Iowa counties, Republicans have been losing voters since 1900.
Democrats have been losing rural voters across the U.S. since the 1960s.


At the same time, a former rural county like Hamilton, just north of Indianapolis/Marion County, is booming and leaving its deep-red roots behind.
