1959, the Year in Review: Air Force, U.S.

Under the heading of "Air Base Controversy".
The air force canceled the construction of the Bong Air Force Base near  Burlington, Wis, in October.  Some $16,000,000 had been spent in condemning several hundred farms and starting the construction of the base.  Air Force Secretary James S. Douglas blamed the "explosive changes in technology" for the decision to give up on the six-year project.  He added that Bong had suddenly become needless and too expensive.

The abandoned project was named in honor of Wisconsin's -- and America's -- "ace of aces".
