Milwaukee Area Communities Move to Ban Guns from Public Buildings

Probably to the chagrin of these folks.

Some cities act to ban guns from government buildings. (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 8/20/2011)

Excerpt: Municipalities across the Milwaukee region are moving to ban weapons in public buildings just months before the state's new concealed carry law goes into effect.

Firearms and other weapons - hidden or not - have no place in municipal buildings, except in the hands of law enforcement officers, many elected officials say.

Milwaukee, Waukesha, Brookfield, Port Washington and Elm Grove are among the municipalities in the region that are drafting ordinances to ban weapons and considering posting signs in government buildings informing people of the prohibition.

Whitefish Bay approved an ordinance that bans firearms from its public buildings. Thiensville officials say they plan to post signs banning weapons at their municipal building.

And state Department of Administration Secretary Mike Huebsch is putting together a task force that will make recommendations to him in September about whether to prohibit weapons at the Capitol and other state buildings.

Not all municipalities will ban weapons from their buildings, though.

Hartford considered a prohibition, but the Washington County municipality rejected it even though department heads had urged elected officials to continue the city's more than 50-year-old prohibition against having weapons on public property.

"Why would we preclude law-abiding citizens from being able to carry?" said Hartford Common Council President Tim Michalak, who did not want to restrict people's rights when the concealed carry law takes effect Nov. 1
