No Concealed Carry in Columbus Public Buildings
Columbus will keep concealed weapons out of city buildings. (Beaver Dam Daily Citizen, 7/20/2011)
Excerpt: The Columbus City Council is looking at posting notices on all city buildings forbidding weapons on the property under the state's new concealed carry law.
"Obviously, it is an option, and there are pros and cons," Chief of Police Dan Meister told the council at a council meeting Tuesday night.
"If that is the wish, then I think we need to be consistent with all buildings," Meister stated.
Meister said that licenses for people to carry concealed weapons will not be issued until at least October. In the meantime, he will be working with the council to plan for posting the buildings as being off limits to concealed weapons.
By state law, the city will not be allowed to keep the weapons out of city parks and parking lots.
"The city has chosen, like others, not to have concealed carry in any public buildings," Mayor Bob Link said after the meeting. "There will be signage. You have got to read the signs. We are blending into what a lot of people are going to do. It's on the side of safety."
