UW system administrators are trying to standardize general education requirements to comply with reforms approved during the biennial budget negotiations aimed at making it easier for students to transfer credits between the 13 universities.
But the proposed elimination of the ethnic studies requirement has drawn protests from student and faculty concerned that the change is tantamount to erasing part of history.
It also follows Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin’s July announcement of the closure of UW-Madison’s diversity, equity and inclusion office, and the university’s recent decision to shutter the equity and well-being department housed in its human resources office.
