After Askins' death from lung cancer, his widow, Caryl Askins, took over the business despite not knowing much about the industry. Askins was notoriously press-shy but managed to create a cozy, eclectic bookshop beloved by readers far and wide. In its 70 year tenure, it survived the rollercoaster ride of independent bookstores before and after the digital age and Amazon's transformation of the industry.
