GET ME REWRITE: Republican county sheriff joins Wisconsin GOP voter suppression project

According to emails provided to the Wisconsin State Journal in a public records request, Dodge County Sheriff Dale Schmidt, a Republican, sent emails in early August to clerks in three communities — the towns of Beaver Dam, Hustisford and Ashippun — indicating that, while the boxes are once again legal in Wisconsin,
“I strongly encourage you to avoid using a drop box.” Dale Schmidt (copy) Schmidt DALE SCHMIDT “Even if set up the best way possible to avoid the potential for fraudulent activity, criminal activity many times finds ways to subvert even the best plans,” Schmidt wrote in the emails, which were first reported by WisPolitics.com. “I also struggle with even the appearance of the potential for fraud even if no fraud occurs.”
“The appearance of fraud can degrade trust in our system,” Schmidt continued, adding that his intent in the email was to ensure that “every legitimate vote is counted and everyone who is legally permitted by law to vote has the opportunity to vote one time.”
