Marion County, Indiana: Why Republican strategists lose sleep at night

Indianapolis metro area

From a 17.2 percentage point Republican advantage in 1984 to a 29.1 percentage point Democratic advantage in 2020.  That's quite a swing.

3rd party votes:  18.6% in 1992, 8.7% in 1996. 6.4% in 2016
(Alabama segregationist George Wallace received 10.5% of the vote in 1968)

Trump received 3,815 more votes than he did in 2016, a 3% increase.   Biden received 34,873 more votes than Clinton did in 2016, an increase of 16%.

Trump's share of the vote decreased by 1.1 percentage points.  Biden increased Clinton's share of the vote by 5.5 percentage points.

The GOP metro problem, graphed:  diverse population growth.  (Same source as line graph above.)

Demographically speaking.

% of population 25 and older with bachelor's degree:
  • 30.9% - Marion County
  • 26.5% - Indiana
  • 32.1% - U.S.
% of population 65 and older:
  • 12.9% - Marion County
  • 16.1% - Indiana
  • 16.5% - U.S.
% of population living in poverty:
  • 15.2% - Marion County
  • 11.9% - Indiana
  • 10.5% - U.S. (they're joking, of course)

The GOP dumbing down of America is not working in very diverse Marion County.
