In 2007, Dane County and the City of Middleton purchased the Hinrichs Farm at the western edge of the city limits for the purpose of land conservation. Total cost: $420,000, with the city's share being $40,000.
However, the Hinrichs family stipulated in the agreement that a portion of the land on the northeast corner of the property be set aside for residsential development. Thus was born the environmentally troubled neighborhood of Hidden Oaks.

The subdivision was built on land that used to be a lake, according to Fuszard. It means the water tables are already higher than usual. So, add rain and melting snow, and there’s nowhere for the water to go, Fuszard said.
Much of the water runs off downhill to a field that includes the headwaters of the Black Earth Creek. The land is owned by Dane County Parks.
