The last time Valley County voted for a Democratic candidate for president was in 1932. (Barry Goldwater won by 3.5 percentage points in 1964, and George Wallace received 6.6% of the vote in 1968.)

Not to be.  Ord, a town in Nebraska that is smack in the middle of the country, set on the edge of the state's vast sand hills, has been losing residents since its heyday in the 1930's, including 10 percent during the 90's. 
So when 10 young couples -- all professionals -- recently moved to this town of about 2,200, it was seen as a good omen that perhaps the long decline was ending.
