Population loss in rural Iowa: Palo Alto County

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Buena Vista County is one of 69 in the state that are losing population. 
Newly-released estimates place the county under 20,000 population for the first time in at least a decade, down from 20,102 in 2017 to 19,874 for 2018. Census estimates have reduced population of the county for five consecutive years, from the recent high of 20,612 in 2013. 
In the area, Cherokee, Clay, Ida, Sac, Pocahontas and Palo Alto County all saw a decline in the new estimates, with only O’Brien seeing a slight increase.
