Columbia County's population peaked in 1940 after experiencing a nearly 10% growth during the years of the Great Depression. Since then the county has experienced two decades of increased population: the 1970s and 1990s. It is estimated to have lost 5% of its population since 2000.
As of July 1, 2014, 20.5% of Crawford County's population is 65 and over compared to the state's 15.2%. Its 0-to-4 demographic of is 5.0% vs. Wisconsin's 5.9%
