After rapid growth in the 19th century, Door County spent the first 7 decades of the 20th century experiencing a population ebb and flow. It then posted a 38% population increase from 1970 to 2000. Since then, however, it has entered a period of slow decline.
Wisconsin's Applied Population Laboratory (APL) projects that Door County will be among the 10 counties with the greatest percent of population decline during the years 2010-2040. (page 20)
As of July 1, 2014, 26.4% of Door County's population is 65 and over compared to the state's 15.2%. Its 0-to-4 demographic of is 3.9% vs. Wisconsin's 5.9%. No surprise that the county appears on the APL list I referenced above.
