Demand for Ebooks Grows Exponentially in Wisconsin
Libraries flooded by demand for e-books. (Oshkosh Northwestern, 5/1/2011)
Excerpt: Libraries can barely keep up with rocketing demand for electronic books as more people turn to Kindles, Nooks and Ipads for reading.
Wisconsin libraries in 2010 loaned out e-books 27,320 times compared to 1,609 times in 2009, according to state data.
Those numbers are very small considering the Oshkosh Public Library alone circulates a total of 1.1 million materials annually. But the rate of growth, a roughly 1,600 percent increase from 2009 to 2010, shouldn't be ignored, said Jeff Gilderson-Duwe, director of the Oshkosh library and the five-county Winnefox Library System.
"We expect the growth curve on this to be nearly vertical in the next couple years, so we need to be there," he said. "We need to get more supply in place for people who are buying these e-readers."
State public libraries currently share a collection of only 1,939 e-books.
"That's a bit of a problem for us because we as a statewide consortium haven't been able to grow the collection as fast as demand," Gilderson-Duwe said.
