Consequences of GOP bashing of public education
As administrators report teacher applications for positions coming in at half the rate they were prior to the pandemic, it’s no longer a question of whether Michigan is facing an educator shortage but where those shortages are and how badly it’s impacting students.
And as COVID funding dries up – which may have triaged staffing shortages in some districts – and schools begin to poach talent from one another to fill voids, shortages will likely continue unless further policy is implemented.
That’s according to a 249-page report from Public Policy Associates released Monday which also indicated a shortage of substitute teachers to help with employee absences; a lack of appropriately credentialed staff, and; issues with educators moving either between districts or out of the profession altogether were seen as some of the key reasons Michigan continues to face shortages in classrooms.
