GET ME REWRITE: GOP voters in Ottawa County Michigan are less enthusiastic about Donald Trump than the rest of the state


The GOP margin of victory in presidential elections has shrunk from 59.8 percentages points in 1984 to 21.4 percentage points in 2020.

3rd-party candidates received 17.9% of vote in 1992, 7.3% of vote in 1996, 7.2% in 2016;
(Alabama segregationist George Wallace received 7.2% of the vote in 1968)


And the lack of general enthusiasm was demonstrated again on Tuesday.

In the Republican primary, former President Donald Trump earned the support of 68.2% of voters in the state, with 756,636 votes. Nikki Haley earned 26.6% of the vote, a total of 294,817 votes. Three percent of Republican voters, 33,397, cast uncommitted votes. 
There were 62,890 ballots cast in Ottawa County during the primary, a voter turnout of 26.5%. The majority of those voters cast their ballots as Republicans. 
There were 47,131 local votes in the Republican primary, compared to 15,110 in the Democratic primary. Trump earned just 60.9% of the Republican votes in Ottawa County. Haley finished second with 15,495 votes, or 32.9%. The next highest total was uncommitted at 3.3% and 1,539 votes.
