Day by day: What Trump said about the pandemic (July 1-15, 2020)

July 15, 2020.   U.S. total Covid cases =  3,715,030 (+70,941 which is 11% of current total)

July 15, 2021.  U.S. total Covid cases = 33,921,150 (+38,236)

CNN, 7/15/2021
Rarely has a president shown himself to be so unequal to a tragic national emergency.
Hundreds of Americans are dying daily and tens of thousands are getting infected from a once-in-a-century virus. States and cities are closing down again, threatening to trigger a ruinous new economic slump. Doctors and nurses lack sufficient protective gear as they battle the deadly pathogen. And with testing swamped by waves of disease, one top official is warning of the "the most difficult time" ever for US public health this winter.
Yet this is what is on Donald Trump's mind: Joe Biden didn't fix the country's roads and bridges, crowds of bikers and boaters in MAGA hats prove that election polls are wrong, and the border wall is almost finished (except it isn't). Oh, and by the way, where is Hunter Biden?
Trump struck all the wrong notes on Tuesday, as the US set yet another single day record for new coronavirus infections with 67,417.

“Think of this, if we didn’t do testing, instead of testing over 40 million people, if we did half the testing we would have half the cases,” Trump said at a press conference at the White House. “If we did another, you cut that in half, we would have, yet again, half of that. But the headlines are always testing.”
Trump said that while coronavirus testing “is a good thing,” it has also served as “fodder for the fake news to report cases.” He said that if the U.S. didn’t test people for Covid-19, then you wouldn’t have “all the headlines” because the nation has one of the lowest mortality rate.

Vietnam, for example, had the lowest death rate from covid-19 in the world (0.04 per 100 000) and the second lowest levels of population overweight at 18.3%. The UK has the third highest death rate globally (184 deaths per 100 000) and the fourth highest prevalence of overweight at 63.7%. The United States has the next highest death rate at 152.49 deaths per 100 000 and has 67.9% of the population overweight.

The coronavirus pandemic has spawned a whole new genre of Trump’s falsehoods. The category in just a few months has reached nearly 1,000 claims, more than his tax claims combined. Trump’s false or misleading claims about the impeachment investigation — and the events surrounding it — contributed almost 1,200 entries to the database.

"I think when you're in a hospital, especially in that particular setting where you're talking to a lot of soldiers and people that in some cases just got off the operating tables, I think it's a great thing to wear a mask," Trump told reporters. "I've never been against masks, but I do believe they have a time and a place."

President Donald Trump made it to the critical battleground state of Florida on Friday to raise campaign cash and tend to issues of high interest there for his base supporters. But his efforts to relaunch travel after a hiatus caused by a surge in coronavirus cases hit a new snag as his campaign canceled a weekend rally in New Hampshire, citing a tropical storm threatening the area.

Coronavirus patients are pouring into hospitals in hot spots such as Florida, Arizona, California and Texas, and virus hospitalizations are setting records almost daily in those states. The influx is straining intensive care units, which are expanding to add new beds and installing special airflow systems to reduce the spread within the hospitals.
But as the pandemic rages in new epicenters in the United States, the Trump administration is increasingly sidelining its own health experts in pivotal decisions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is coming under intense pressure from President Trump and his allies, who are downplaying the dangers in a bid to revive the economy ahead of the Nov. 3 election. His comments, at a White House coronavirus task force briefing, came about two hours after Trump undercut the recommendations of administration health experts as he continued to step up pressure on state and local officials to reopen school campuses this fall.
“I disagree with @CDCgov on their very tough & expensive guidelines for opening schools,” Trump wrote. “While they want them open, they are asking schools to do very impractical things. I will be meeting with them!!!"

For Trump, it's always been about winning.  Nothing else.  All he cared about at this point in time was November 3, 2020.

Not Trump's quote.  But it might as well be.

“We’re at 130,” Trump said at an event on reopening schools, referring to the more than 130,000 Americans who have now died from the virus. “I think we could have been 2 and a half or 3 million people,” he said. “We’ve saved literally hundreds of thousands of lives,” the President said.

American heroes defeated the Nazis, dethroned the fascists, toppled the communists, saved American values, upheld American principles and chased down the terrorists to the very ends of the earth," Trump said Saturday evening at the White House. "We are now in the process of defeating the radical left, the Marxists, the anarchists, the agitators, the looters, and people who, in many instances, have absolutely no clue what they are doing."

Donald is projecting.

"Now we have tested, almost 40 million people. By so doing, we show cases -- 99% of which are totally harmless -- results that no other country can show because no other country has testing that we have," Trump said. "Not in terms of the numbers, or in terms of the quality."
It is unclear how the President could be under the impression that 99% of cases are "totally harmless."

"There is a rise in Coronavirus cases because our testing is so massive and so good, far bigger and better than any other country," Trump said in a tweet late on Thursday. "This is great news, but even better news is that death, and the death rate, is down,

By the end of the month, it will have tripled.

"Today's announcement proves that our economy is roaring back. It's coming back extremely strong," Trump said in a morning press conference. "We have some areas where we're putting out the flames or the fires and that's working out well."
[snip]
And while the president continued to deliver a message that the coronavirus is mostly under control, choosing to focus on touting economic progress, economists were quick to point out that the numbers were based on data collected in mid-June and don't account for a spike in COVID-19 numbers in recent weeks that has led several states and localities to pause or roll back their reopenings.
"With all of the trials and tribulations that we read about every night – much of it totally fake news, fortunately. And if the consumer didn't get it, you wouldn't have good consumer confidence," Trump said

"Actually, I had a mask on. I sort of liked the way I looked. It was OK. It was a dark, black mask and I thought it think and if people feel good about it they should do it."
Trump hasn't worn a face mask in front of cameras since the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided new guidelines in April encouraging Americans to wear facial coverings when social distancing was not an option.

One year later, Covid is still very much with us.  No disappearing act here.
