The offense, if the white authorities are correct, was 10 months of violent attacks on the white people of this half black, half‐white parish, or county.
Systematic antiwhite violence among Southern blacks, especially rural and small‐town blacks, is extremely rare, and the Negroes of Claiborne Parish insist that no such thing happened here. Some say that at least part of the violence was committed by whites and blamed on blacks.
Whatever the case, the violence had no apparent connection with any national movement. It was local violence and it was, for the most part, locally handled—and with such crushing force that the black community was spiritually devastated.
