Population loss in rural Kansas: Rooks County

The last time Rooks County voted for a Democratic candidate for president was in 1936.  In 1964, Barry Goldwater won by 1.6 percentage points. George Wallace received 8.7% of the vote in 1968.

The area was already slipping, Sheriff Dave Denton said over coffee down at The Country Inn, which doubles as Greyhound's station in Stockton. ''We've been losing population in Stockton and Rooks County since 1910,'' the Sheriff said. ''And you know this isn't going to help.'' 
In 1910, Rooks County had a population of 11,282. By 1980 it was 7,000 and last year, according to the Roots County tax assessor, it was 6,297. Stockton's population was about 2,000 in the 1980 census but last year, the tax assessor said, it was about 1,750.
