Excerpt: A small overflow homeless shelter established in 2008 has brought to light so many previously uncounted homeless families in Dane County that children are now equal in numbers to single men among those using shelter services. The increase adds to concerns about the long-term impact of poverty on a new generation of children growing up in unstable surroundings. In Dane County schools, the number of homeless students has nearly doubled in the last six years, mirroring a statewide trend.
