Headline Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 10/2/2025

Madeline Heim reports:
The DNR has been studying the forever chemicals in soil and water in the Oneida County community since 2022, when randomized testing showed residents' private wells with levels 160 times higher than the state standard. PFAS levels in the town about 10 miles east of Rhinelander are some of the highest in the country.

According to the letters, industrial sludge material generated from the mill's operations had been spread on multiple farm fields in Stella at least since 1996. The mill produced specialty paper products, including greaseproof paper used in microwave popcorn bags that was manufactured using a PFAS-containing chemical, the letters say.[emphasis added]

Long-term exposure to PFAs is detrimental to human health.
