Since December 2024, five of the nine members of the WUSD school board have resigned, including three in June alone. Community members say the resignations have followed an ideological shift to the right on the school board and an increased focus on policies concerning dress codes, LGBTQ+ students and health curriculum in board meetings. School boards in Wisconsin are meant to be nonpartisan.
Ahead of the meeting, dozens of community members gathered outside the building to protest the board's recent moves. Many attended the meeting afterward, with the crowd overflowing into the hallway.
