Benjamin Ruiz reports:
Reactions on the Brazilian side — I must say — were calm and sensible. The outbreak was reported with facts, decisions and solutions made. The poultry breeder farm in Rio Grande do Sul was immediately taken care of. The sector abstained from shouting and slapping, moved quickly and faced the facts.
But the problem was immediately felt outside Brazil. China, Argentina and Mexico, to name a few, halted imports. Hopefully, this will not last too long, because what is Brazil going to do? A country that just reported exporting 5.3 MMT of chicken in 2024 cannot hold all those tons of meat too long. Market disruptions will show domestically and outside Brazil. Say, Mexico opened up to chicken imports from Brazil to control inflation and domestic chicken price.
