New York Times followup: Comparing the land masses of Brazil and Costa Rica


Presented as a statement of fact.  Costa Rica has less than 1% of the land mass of Brazil, which places it a little more than halfway between Maryland (12,406 sq. mi.) and West Virginia (24,230 sq, mi.), a comparison that might be more meaningful to many read3rs of the New York Times.

The number of fires in the country has more than doubled compared with last year, burning an area the size of Costa Rica in August alone.
