Dr. Smith: It might be because they want to be fitter for hockey, or because they want to be more muscular or “cut” from an appearance point of view.

According to Merriam-Webster, the first-known use of 'cut' as an adjective, as in marked by a well-developed and highly defined musculature, occurred in 1990.
