JoAnna took a contactless approach to Halloween this year – I would have just as soon let it pass unnoticed -- which took place just before Wisconsin recorded its worst Covid number to date. So far this week, we have come close to breaking the 6,000 threshold of new cases on three consecutive days: 5,711 on Election Day; 5,935 the day after (when the
virus was supposed to magically disappear, right?) and 5,922 yesterday. That’s more cases than Alaska has reported since the start of the pandemic.
The individually packaged candy went surprisingly fast. In fact, shortly after 5:00, the official treat-or-treat starting time in Middleton, I looked out the side door and saw 5 costumed kids, their parents chaperoning, cautiously helping themselves. The bowl was nearly empty by 7:30 when JoAnna decided to close up shop, 30 minutes before the official end of CandyFest. In past years, we usually have lots of candy left over. Kids in our neighborhood concentrate on Hubbard and Elmwood and bypass the shorter cross streets.
