DEI programs have existed on college campuses for decades. One of their primary purposes is making individuals who come from communities historically discriminated against feel welcome during their time on campus.
For example, in the same week that Vos proposed the elimination of DEI offices, members of the UW-Madison community are grappling with a video showing a white student using racist slurs and saying she wants Black people returned to slavery so she can abuse them. More than 30,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the student's expulsion. [emphasis added]
