Students and members of Muskego High School's True Equality Alliance Club, focused on advocacy for equality and creating a safe space for all students, advised board members against the proposed policy revision.
"Although we wish we could say that every student was safe and could be open about their identity at home, this is just not the reality as many students would be put in danger if this change would be enacted," said TEA Club President Sunday Rhine.
School is the only place some youth can be themselves, Rhine said, and taking away district staff's ability to refer to them as their preferred identities will only isolate students.
Rhine referred to a Trevor Project study that found LGBTQ+ youth who have one supportive adult in their lives were 40% less likely to attempt suicide.
