It’s fitting that Halloween weekend resulted in four horror movies cracking the top 10. Paramount’s R-rated thriller “Smile” took fourth place with $5 million from 3,221 venues, pushing ticket sales to an impressive $92 million. At No. 5, “Halloween Ends” added $3.8 million from 3,419 theaters in its third outing for a domestic tally of $60 million.

The little bit of good news for Hollywood is that this weekend's box office is a 1.6% improvement over the same weekend last year.

This year has resulted in profound changes on the movie theater business in Connecticut with multiple movie theater locations closing and others getting new owners as the effects the pandemic and changes within the film industry reshape the landscape. Five theater locations have closed permanently since the start of the year with a sixth, the Niantic Cinema 5, taking a temporary hiatus from operations between September and December.
