GOP gerrymandering spotlight on Wisconsin Assembly District 59

The 59th Assembly stretches from north to south through portions of Calumet, Sheboygan, Fond duLac and Washington Counties, a distance of almost 60 miles.

Election denier Tim Ramthun (R-Campbellsport) has represented the district since January 2019.  He ran for Governor this year, hoping to snag an endorsement from Trump.  Didn't happen.  He ended up with less than 6% of the August GOP primary vote.

The monster with 3 heads.  The 58th Assembly District is located wholly within Washington County, which is about as red as you ocan get in Wisconsin.

Rick Gundrum (R-Slinger) has represented the district since January 2018.

With a population of 74,000, Appleton in Outagamie County (green box) has enough residents to fill an Assembly District on its own.  It doesn't need any help from Menasha in Winnebago County (orange box).

Lee Snodgrass (D-Appleton) has represented the district since January 2021.

Gotta wonder how the GOP gerrymanderers justified the minor tweaks in the 2020 map.

Here's a GOP gerrymandering seminar in how to dilute the liberal vote in the City of Appleton (population 74,000).

The egregious Dave Murphy has represented the district since January 2013.

Population growth in the Appleton metro area and a decline in rural areas forced the GOP to abandon one of its most indefensible gerrymandered designs of 2010.

More GOP gerrymandering shenanigans.

Neenah and Menasha (red box), located in the northeast corner of Winnebago County, are communities of interest.   They should be in the same district.

On the other hand, the Town of Grand Chute is a community of interest with Appleton in Outagamie County.  The area in the orange box should be in the same district as Appleton.

So much dickin' around.

Rachel Cabral-Guevera has represented the district since January 2021.  She is not running for an open state senate seat.

By stretching the western boundary of this district deeper into rural Winnebago County, the GOP has insured that the 55th cannot be flipped.

The population of Oshkosh of 67,000, yet almost all of the residential areas of the city appears to be located in the 54th Assembly district.  That's about 8,000 more than the average number of constituents per district.

Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) has represented the district since January 2007.  He is not running for re-election.

With a population of 171,000, Winnebago County should have three Assembly districts of its own.  There are no good reasons why the GOP felt that had to dip into Fond du Lac County not once, but twice, to create the 53rd district.

The useless, I'm-just-taking-up-space-here Michael Schraa has represented the district since January 2013.

The 52nd Assembly District is wholly within Fond du Lac County.  The problem is that GOP Gerrymander Show doesn't the city of Fond du Lac and its immediate surrounding area to be a community of interest.  That would be approximately what's within the orange box.

Jeremy Thiesfeldt (R-Fond du Lac) has represented the district since January 2011 but is not running for re-election.

Another decade when Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac are in different districts.

The 51st Assembly District sprawls across four southwestern Wisconsin counties from north to south to east:  Suak, Dodge, Lafayette, and Green.  It flunks the 'compactness' test and has dubious value in preserving a 'community of interest'.  (See "State-based requirements" below.)

Todd Novak (D-Dodgeville) has represented the district since January 2015.

Reminds Retiring Guy of one of those funny pages features.  (It's the gerrymandering games the GOP plays.)

The initial premise for this district is admirable:  Include all of Juneau County (population 27,000) in the same district. Then comes the gerrymandering, with seemingly random townships blocks from the counties of Sauk (green highlight), Richland (orange box), and Vernon (red box) added to the mix.

This GOP gerrymandered district was tweaked so that the legs are now even.
