Wisconsin 2022 elections: Who's running in the 96th Assembly District

Democrat Karen Mischel, mayor of Viroqua, will challenge Republican incumbent Loren Oldenburg.

“Being a representative is about doing what’s right for your constituents, even when it isn’t easy. Our current legislature too often chooses what’s politically convenient instead of what’s right for Wisconsin. I’m running to change that.” As mayor of Viroqua, Mischel has guided the city’s response to COVID-19, invested in critical infrastructure upgrades, and been a vocal advocate for local small businesses. Before becoming mayor, she served in the Merchant Marines for 17 years.
Oldenburg has represented the district since January 2019.  Prior to that Republican Lee Nerison, first elected in November 2004, held the seat for 7 terms.

It's been a long time since a Democrat won this district.  The challenger in 2018 came within 3.2 percentage points of victory.

It's nearly a 100-mile drive from the southwest to the northeast corner of the district.
