GET ME REWRITE: IOC continues boogying its way to doomsday, taking Japan as hostage

The Tokyo Olympic Games were originally scheduled to take place from July 23 through August 8, which, as it turned out, coincided with Japan's first spike in Covid cases.

Things have gotten worse since then.

Japan's summer 2020 peak occured on August 3 with 1,998 new cases reported.  Three days ago (7/11/2021), Japan reported 2,457 new cases.  (Yup, it's a mess.)

The Guardian, 6/2/2021

"These Games will go ahead barring only armageddon,” the tin-eared IOC declared this week, having apparently decided that a country trying to contain the second wave of a pandemic doesn’t quite meet the standards of apocalyptic emergency required to abandon ship.

The number of active cases in Japan is going up again.
