Eric Clapton's "Layla" and its impact on the baby name charts

 


Round 1.  "Layla" debuted at #98 on the Billboard 100 for the week ending March 27, 1971.  It spent 10 weeks on the chart, peaking at #51.

Round 2.  "Layla" debuted at #92 on the Billboard 100 for the week ending May 13, 1972.  It spent 15 weeks on the chart, peaking at #10.

Layla made her first appearance on the SSA's Top 1000 Baby Names for Girls chart in 1972, just over a years after Derek & the Dominies' debut double album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, was released.   She spent just 7 years on the chart, peaking at #742 in 1975.  She reappeared in 1993, only to drop off again four years later.  She made a much more determined return in 1998, rocketing into the top 100 in 8 years.  To date, her personal best occurred in 2019 when she peaked at #23.


As for the album,...


Round 1.  It debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums for the week ending November 21, 1970.  It spent 65 weeks on the chart, peaking at #16.

Round 2.  "Layla" debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums for the week ending August 10, 1974.  It spent 10 weeks on the chart, peaking at #107.

Round 3.  "Layla" debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums for the week ending February 19, 1977.  It spent 2 weeks on the chart, peaking at #183.
