GET ME REWRITE: Thousands of Latino voters in Hidalgo County, Texas, reward Trump for his inept and devastating handling of the pandemic

3rd party votes:  11.3% in 1992, 4.7% in 1996. 4% in 2016
(Segregationist George Wallace received 6.9% of the vote in 1968)

Trump added 41,885 votes to his 2016 tally, a 25     86% increase.  Biden received 9,390 more votes than Clinton did in 2016, an increase of 8%.

The death rate from the virus peaked at 5 percent and remains high in El Valle, as the mostly Latino population calls the sprawling valley that spans the Mexican border, representing at least 2,168 funerals. 
Nationally, the virus has killed less than 2 percent of those known to be infected. Health officials blame a combination of poverty, lack of access to health care and a close-knit culture for the widespread infection within family clusters.
