Covidiot Chronicle: La Crosse County, home to a University of Wisconsin System campus and Viterbo University, is a coronavirus hot spot



The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse reported 105 new positive cases Friday out of 279 tests administered -- a rate of 37.63 percent positive. UW-L has reported a total of 202 cases this week beginning Tuesday. A total of 370 students are being quarantined at Coate Hall on campus through Sept. 24. The Viterbo University COVID-19 dashboard listed 50 active student cases of COVID-19 as of Friday.

Viterbo University plans a return to campus in the fall and will implement key safety measures to keep the students and employees safe. Earlier this month Viterbo, along with UW-La Crosse and Western Technical College, released a joint announcement stating each institution was planning to offer on campus classes, with each working on more detailed plans specific to their campus. The Viterbo plan, “Moving Forward @ Viterbo,” will continue to be refined and will be reviewed by health officials. 
“The plan will be responsive to the situation and will continue to integrate new information and recommendations from health officials throughout the summer,” said Glena Temple, Viterbo University President.

The university also is shutting down academic buildings, the student union and in-person study spaces, including at Murphy Library, for at least two weeks. UW-L reported 105 new cases Friday and a total of more than 200 last week, forcing the quarantining of Coate Hall last week.
