GET ME REWRITE: WRAL reopens its COVID-19 reopening investigation

Neighboring South Carolina started reopening retailers April 20. That week, the state tallied more than 1,100 new infections. With each subsequent week, the number of new cases has dropped, down to 990 projected cases this week.

New cases for the week of May 20-26 are up 20% over the previous week and 38% over the week of May 6-12.

Georgia has been more aggressive, allowing gyms and salons to open April 24, followed days later by theaters and restaurants. Yet, Georgia’s daily case numbers dropped steadily from 673 on May 1 to just over 300 this week. Those numbers are preliminary, however, as some test results may not be back yet.

New cases for the week of May 18-24 are up 13% over the previous week.  It was the largest number of new cases in a single week since April 12-18.
