This map shows the stark reality of rural Iowa's population loss.  (Des Moines Register, 5/29/2018)
Nearly 700 Iowa communities lost residents between 2010 and 2017. Only 232 cities saw a population increase over that time period and 11 communities saw no change.
Iowa added nearly 100,000 people since 2010, boosting the state's 2017 population to 3,145,711. But most population growth has been limited to metropolitan areas.
Only 41, or 4.3 percent, of Iowa’s 944 incorporated cities have a population of more than 10,000 people, according to an Iowa State Data Center analysis. But those 41 cities account for half of Iowa's total population.
