Population loss in rural Iowa: Adair County

Greenfield is the county seat of Adair County.

Census data shows Adair County has lost nearly 6 percent of its population in the past five years, resulting in a restructuring of the district and a major merger. 
Junior high school students will be in Adair-Casey while all high school students will be in Guthrie Center.
Superintendent Steve Smith said Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center schools must merge in order to compete with schools in the metro. 
“It doesn’t feel good here,” Smith said. “It doesn’t feel good in Guthrie Center. Everybody would like to stay where they are, but we all know what’s going on in rural Iowa. When you go outside of Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center, people come up and say, ‘That is the coolest name ever.’”
