4/12/2018 update, "Construction begins on new UW-Madison SERF facility", starts here.

What started out as a bright, sunshiny day in Middleton turned overcast by the time I reached the Madison Isthmus.

UW-Madison looks to replace SERF with new, bigger campus gym.  (Wisconsin State Journal, 1/5/2017)
Add to that a leaky roof, problems with accessibility and plumbing and other systems in need of repair, and UW officials and students have concluded that the most popular student gym on campus — built less than 35 years ago — must be replaced. If all goes according to the plans of the UW-Madison Division of Recreational Sports, the facility at 715 W. Dayton St. will be closed for good late in the summer of 2017 and torn down in the fall.

Shall we assume that everything is not going to plan?

UW's plans for rebuilt SERF aim to give students a better workout space.  (Capital Times, 1/13/2017)
Campus officials hope to give the students what they want in a $93 million project to raze and rebuild the SERF on its current site at 715 W. Dayton St. The plan calls for quadrupling the fitness space to 35,000 square feet, doubling the number of basketball courts to eight and quintupling the number of studios for fitness classes to five. The new building also will have a swimming pool that meets requirements for tournament competition.

Closing date set for UW-Madison's SERF, new fields open.  (Wisconsin State Journal, 6/19/2017)
With the facility closed, the Division of Recreational Sports will open temporary fitness space in nearby Ogg Hall, and move some of the SERF’s equipment to the Natatorium, on the west side of campus, as well as to the Camp Randall Sports Center, better known as the Shell.

Rec Sports renovation plans will make SERF look less like ‘a dungeon’.  (Badger Herald, 9/27/2016)
The changes are part of UW’s Master Plan, which involves the demolition of the SERF and the remodeling of the Nat, as well as updates to other facilities around campus. The renovations to the exercise facilities will primarily be funded through student segregated fees.
