Almost as high as you can be east of the Mississippi


North Carolina's Mount Mitchell is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains.   The parking lot elevation shown here is 105 feet* lower from where the observation deck is located.  Unfortunately, by the time my wife and I walked to this point, rain started to fall and clouds obscured the view. 

This was my third visit to Mount Mitchell. The first two took place on camping trips during the early 1980s.
